In an interview with CEPR's VoxTalks Economics, Laksmi Iyer discusses the expansion of the franchise in India post-colonial consititution. All adults were given the right to vote, in contrast to only the rich who could vote before. Surprisingly few newly eligible voters few took it up. Nonetheless, she found that policies that shifted to benefit poorer parts of the population.
